National Heritage Week 2010
National Heritage Week 2010 will run from the 21st to the 29th of August, 2010.
National Heritage Week aims to build awareness and education about our Ireland's heritage thereby encouraging its conservation and preservation.
Each year many national and hundreds of local community organisations participate by organising events throughout the country. Many of the events that take place during the week are free and the programme highlights the abundance of great work that is carried out in all communities in Ireland to preserve and promote our natural, built and cultural heritage.
A full list of events for the 2010 programme is available at the National Heritage Week website.
Michael Collins Commemoration 2010
The 2010 Michael Collins commemoration will take place today, 22 August 2010 at Béal na mBláth, where he died in 1922.
Each year, a speaker is invited to deliver the Oration at the site. This year's speaker will be Fianna Fail Finance Minister, Brian Lehihan. The choice of speaker has been somewhat controversial and has been criticised by members of the opposition Fine Gael party who feel they have a closer connection with the Collins legacy.
More details are available at the General Michael Collins website.
