Great Famine Reviews

The Great Hunger

The Great Hunger: Ireland 1845-1849

Cecil Woodham Smith

€12.99 (PB)

Published by Penguin

Long considered a classic on the subject this is certainly one of the finest books written on the famine. That said it has not dated well and having been published originally in the 1960s is now well out of date with regard to much of the regional, local and archival research that has occurred since the death of the author. As a starting point this is very good.

The Tourist's Gaze: Travellers to Ireland, 1800 - 2000

Edited by Glenn Hooper

9781859183236

€65 (HB) - €29 (PB)

For those interested in the article on traveller reports on Ireland during the famine, this is a must. But, and this is a strength, it doesn't just cover the famine period but rather a much longer 200 year period. It is expensive (even for a university press) at €65 in hardback and €29 in paperback but it is a real treasure and worth every penny.
