Sent by De Valera to negotiate on behalf of his country, Collins knew the enormous challenge that faced him when returning to Ireland to sell the details of the negotiated peace. 'I have signed my own death warrant' he is reported to have said as he added his signature to the Treaty.

Collins negotiated the Treaty as a stepping stone to freedom.
